Digital Marketing in Auckland

The hardest market in the country to rank in, and the easiest to waste money in.

Auckland is a third of New Zealand - roughly 1.8 million people in one region. It is the most contested search market in the country by a wide margin, and the one where a badly aimed campaign burns cash fastest.

Work we have done here

We work with businesses right across New Zealand, from the Kāpiti Coast to Christchurch, Whanganui, the Manawatū and the Wairarapa, and with clients overseas.

Home building and construction. Website and SEO for a builder whose customers research for months before enquiring, so the site had to hold up to a long look rather than win a quick one.

Commercial services. A firm trading since the late nineties, in a fragmented market where nobody searches the category and everybody searches something narrower. Website and SEO.

Trades and local services across the lower North Island - electrical, landscaping, kitchens - where being found for the right job in the right town is the whole game.

Behind all of it sits twenty-two years of Fortune 500 marketing across four continents, with LVMH, Estée Lauder and The Body Shop. The scale changes. The method does not.

"Auckland" is usually the wrong target

The single biggest mistake we see from Auckland businesses is chasing the city term. "Plumber Auckland" is contested by hundreds of operators across 5,000 square kilometres, most of whom will never serve your customer anyway.

Meanwhile "plumber Titirangi" or "plumber Howick" is a fraction of the competition and a far higher proportion of people who will actually book you.

Auckland is not one market. It is dozens of them, separated by motorway, harbour and habit. Someone in Albany does not think of themselves as shopping in Manukau, and Google knows it.

Start with two suburbs, not twenty

Look at where your last fifty customers actually came from. Most Auckland businesses can answer that from their invoices in ten minutes, and the answer is usually far more concentrated than they expect.

Build for those two or three areas properly. Rank there. Then widen.

The city term is worth going after eventually, but it should be the third or fourth thing you build rather than the first, because it is the slowest and most expensive result on the list.

Paid advertising costs more here

Cost per click in Auckland runs well above the rest of the country for the same terms, because you are bidding against businesses with real budgets and agencies managing them full time.

That does not make ads a bad idea. It makes negative keywords, tight radius targeting and a landing page that actually converts far more important than they would be in a smaller market. You are paying more per visit and can afford to waste fewer of them.

Where being outside the city helps

Our overheads are not Auckland overheads, and that shows up in the quote. Everything visible is in your dashboard, reporting is monthly and in plain English, and you have a phone number that reaches the person doing the work rather than an account manager relaying it.

For SEO, paid advertising and web development, none of that needs us to be on your street.

Questions from Auckland businesses

Why would I use a Kāpiti agency instead of one in Auckland?

Because the work is the same wherever it is done. We run search, advertising and web development for clients across New Zealand and overseas, most of whom we have never sat opposite. What you get is senior attention on your account rather than a junior in a big-city office, and a phone number that reaches the person doing the work.

Should I target “Auckland” or my suburb?

Your suburb, almost always, and first. “Auckland” is the most contested local term in the country. A page for the two or three areas your customers actually come from will produce enquiries months before a city-wide page does.

Is Auckland really that much harder than the rest of New Zealand?

Yes, and it is not close. More businesses, more agencies actively working the same terms, and higher cost per click for identical keywords. Anyone quoting you provincial timelines for Auckland terms has not looked at the results.

How do we work together if you are not here?

Easily, and it is how most of our work runs. Everything is in your dashboard the moment it happens, reporting is monthly and in plain English, and you can phone the person doing the work rather than an account manager relaying it. If a trip north is useful, we make it.

Ready when you are.

Tell us which suburbs your customers actually come from and we will tell you what is realistic.
