Digital Marketing in Blenheim
Almost exactly the size of Paraparaumu, which is a market we know well.
Blenheim is about 29,800 people. Paraparaumu, where most of our local work happens, is about 29,900. That is not a coincidence worth much on its own - but the search economics of a town this size are something we deal with every week.

Work we have done here
We work with businesses across New Zealand, and a fair number of them are in towns the size of Blenheim.
Tourism and experiences. A guided walk whose visitors plan from other cities and overseas - the same job as selling Marlborough to someone in Auckland or Sydney.
Home building and construction, and an internet provider covering an entire region, both in provincial markets where the town was never going to be the whole audience.
Trades and local services, including several in Paraparaumu - a town within a hundred people of Blenheim in size. The economics of search in a market that size are something we work with every week.
Behind it, twenty-two years of Fortune 500 marketing across four continents with LVMH, Estée Lauder and The Body Shop.
What thirty thousand people means for search
In a town this size, most trades have somewhere between two and eight genuine competitors. That is a completely different problem to Auckland or Christchurch, and it changes the order of what is worth doing.
Ranking first is achievable quickly and cheaply. What it will not do is generate unlimited demand, because there are only so many people searching for a plumber in Blenheim in a given month.
So the honest advice is usually: get the local basics right, do not overspend on them, and put the remaining budget into reaching beyond the town.
Marlborough is a national brand, Blenheim is not
This is the defining feature of the market. Marlborough produces the substantial majority of New Zealand’s wine and is known internationally. “Blenheim” has almost no pull outside the region; “Marlborough” has a great deal.
If you are in wine, tourism, hospitality or anything adjacent, your searches are regional and national rather than local, and your customer is deciding from Auckland, Sydney or London.
Building that business around local SEO is aiming at the wrong audience entirely.
Picton is a different job again
Picton is the ferry terminal, which means a stream of people arriving and leaving with fixed time and specific needs. That is passing-trade search behaviour - “near me”, “open now”, “nearest” - and it is answered by a complete Google Business Profile far more than by anything on your website.
If your customers come off the ferry, hours, photographs, categories and reviews are the whole game.
What we would do first
Google Business Profile, properly finished. Then decide honestly whether you sell to Marlborough residents or to people visiting Marlborough, because those are two different businesses with two different strategies.
Most Blenheim businesses are some of both, and the mistake is running one strategy for both.

Questions from Marlborough businesses
Is a town this size worth doing SEO in?
Yes, and it is cheap to win. With a handful of competitors per trade you can reach position one quickly. The limit is the number of people searching, not the difficulty of ranking - so do the local work properly, then stop spending on it and aim wider.
Should I target Blenheim or Marlborough?
Depends who buys from you. “Blenheim” works for local services. “Marlborough” carries national and international weight and is what visitors, wine buyers and tourists actually search. Most businesses here need both, aimed at different audiences.
What about Picton?
Its own page, and a Google Business Profile job rather than a website one. Ferry traffic searches “nearest” and “open now” - hours, photos and reviews decide that, not copy.
What do you know about a market like ours?
Paraparaumu, where a lot of our work happens, is within a hundred people of Blenheim in size. A small pool of searchers, a handful of competitors per trade, and a map pack that matters more than the website - those are the conditions we work in every week, and they behave the same way here.
Same size as the town we know best.
